Rachael Perry
I’m Rachael Perry, my preferred pronouns are she/her. My first name, Rachael, is a Hebrew name, and Rachel (note the alternative spelling) is a figure in the Bible. I’ve always found irony in this, since I don’t identify with any religion, in fact I consider myself an atheist. Rachel was unhappy in her marriage and lamentably, didn’t have any of her own children. My marriage, and my three children, are by contrast, my greatest sources of joy. My surname, Perry, most likely refers to a pear tree, which I love. I’m drawn to nature, particularly trees. I’ve always connected with my surname and it’s a large part of my identity. For this reason, it was very important for me to keep it when I got married. I was born in England, however, soon afterwards my parents and I immigrated to Canada. I saw my extended family infrequently. Our nuclear family was very tight knit. I never participated in large family gatherings or celebrations. My mother suffered from both chronic physical and mental illness throughout my childhood. I independently moved back to England when I was sixteen, to stay with relatives and finish high school. The greatest gifts I received from my parents were unconditional love, despite their own challenges, as well as a strong work ethic. My parents enrolled me in one of the new french immersion schools in Ottawa in the 1970’s. Speaking french has always been a significant part of who I am; from my growth mindset, to travel, to my career. I was raised and grew on the un-ceded Algonquin Anishinabe territory in what is now called Ontario. I now teach, learn and raise my family on the un-ceded traditional territory of the Katzie Nation, which is part of the Sto:lo Coast Salish people. I am an immigrant to this land, but I was born in a country that colonized and settled it. |
